What’s Your But?
A Sunday afternoon visit to R.E.I. provided this unexpected opportunity for clarity. They had this large chalkboard display at the front of their store with the caption: “What’s Your But?”
This eye-catching display featured all of the excuses people had NOT to go on the adventures for which R.E.I. is known to prepare their patrons for.
“But what if I get lost?”
“But I hate bugs”
“But I get lost easily”
“But I dont like being dirty”
“But where do I go?”
I got a good chuckle from many of these “Buts”…BUT it also got me thinking about my own “Buts” in different areas of my life! The creeping self-doubt, the fear of rejection, the lack of confidence that keeps me from saying Yes! to the opportunities that come my way.
“Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will”
I believe this adage whole-heartedly because I’ve experienced it PERSONALLY!
It’s the reason I don’t speak Spanish. “But what if I say something wrong and sound stupid?”
It’s the reason I stayed in my marriage for longer than was healthy. “But what if no one ever loves me again and I die bitter and alone?”
It’s the reason I don’t play darts. “But what if I poke someone’s eye out and they’re blind forever over a stupid game?”
It’s the reason I didn’t start my business sooner. “But what if everyone thinks my designs are dumb and no one wants to hire me? Who do I think I am?”
“Action is the foundational key to all success”
Here’s what I’ve learned: Nothing is going to happen until I say YES! to making things happen!
That means saying YES! to failure
YES! to disappointment
YES! to fear
YES! to uncertainty and doubt
It also means saying YES! to the joy of doing the work I was meant to do. I get to say YES! to the clients who ask me if I can help them transform their house into the home they crave. I can say YES! to realtors who ask me to help their clients get ready to sell.
The point is, my list of YES’s is so much longer than my list of NO’s. This was an intentional choice on my part. At a certain point, I realized that my NO’s and my Buts were costing me way too much!
“She was powerful, not because she wasn’t scared, but because she went on STRONGLY despite the fear”
This website almost didn’t happen, friends. Why? Because, at first, we had SO many Buts getting in our way. Up until the very day we launched, Buts plagued us to the point of actual tears.
“But I don’t know what to write about”
“But my photos aren’t uploading properly and they look like crap”
“But every time I try to edit the site crashes”
“But I don’t have time for this crap. It’s too stressful and I’m too tired”
“But what if no one reads us? What if no one cares?”
There was MUCH wailing and gnashing of teeth, MANY doubts and fears, and COPIOUS amounts of cuss words involved. The wonderful aspect of being part of an amazing team, however, is never having to go through it alone! Where one or two were weak, the other always managed to be strong. We never let each other sink too far into the dark waters of doubt. We have committed to keep saying YES! to pursuing our dreams. We have vowed to keep saying YES! to the great possibilities and vast potential in each of us. Most of all, we have dedicated ourselves to saying YES! to the team we’ve built and the people we ultimately want to serve. All those YES’s just really don’t leave much room for Buts!
